The holy month of Ramadan, a time of peace, prayer, self-reflection and charity, found many American Muslims across our nation faced with anti-shariah protests organized for June 10 by Act for America, classified as a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center.
American Muslims emphatically believe in upholding the First Amendment right to free speech, but do not condone or promote hate speech. Protests and legislation dubbed as “Anti-Shariah” are designed to stoke fear of Muslims and Islam as incompatible with American values- an undeniably false notion. The Constitution of the United States and the principles of Islam both call for justice, equity, peace and prosperity.
As the most ethnically and racially diverse religious population, American Muslims treasure the pluralism that allows every American to live in peace without suppression of religious freedoms. These anti-shariah protests undermine our Founding Fathers’ vision of a nation that bears no religious test.
The American people will not, and have not, succumbed to this bigotry cloaked as patriotism. Counter protests, such as ones in Seattle, WA, brought forth twice as many supporters, proof that the American spirit will prevail and no community will be marginalized.
